Château D’Eck

“Château d’Eck was built in the Middle Ages. Guillaume VII, Duke of Aquitaine, gifted it to the chapter of St. André in the 11th century. Confiscated in 1287 by Henry III of England, it was returned to Guillaume Goutun, then a cantor at St. André. It served as the residence of the Bishops of Bordeaux from the 13th to the 15th century. Bertrand de Got, Bishop of Bordeaux, resided there for 3 years before becoming Pope Clement V in Avignon. In 1565, the canons of St. André ceded part of the land. In 1824, François Eck inherited it through marriage and gave it his name. It gained fame through numerous writers of the Second Empire and the Third Republic.”
