L’origine du Château Poumey remonte à 1720. It was the property of Jeanne-Thérèse de Pomiers, whose husband was a squire and advisor to the King. The current building was constructed by an English merchant based in Bordeaux, René Alfred Morton, who restored the vineyard in 1871. Château Poumey then built a strong reputation by winning numerous awards at international competitions. Leopold II, the King of the Belgians, was its most illustrious consumer! In 1988, the city of Gradignan bought Château Poumey, the last remaining vineyard property in the municipality. In 1995, it entrusted the management to Château Pape Clément, a Cru Classé of Graves in Pessac. Since 2020, Domaine de Chevalier, a Cru Classé of Graves in Léognan, has been managing this estate on behalf of the city of Gradignan. This great red wine from Pessac-Léognan, refined and complex, is derived from four historical and complementary terroirs of the village. A dry white cuvée was introduced in 2021. Olivier Bernard’s dual objective is to reconnect the history and wines of Château Poumey with the residents of Gradignan and to practice organic viticulture adapted to this environment. A project to rehabilitate the Château’s cellars, create a Wine Club with a shop and event space, will breathe new life into Château Poumey in the heart of Gradignan.
